Implants

As an ICOI-certified practitioner, Dr. Garrett places basic implants for patients who are missing one or several teeth. Unlike traditional dentures, implants preserve the integrity of the jaw and restore the ability to chew efficiently; additionally implants can be used to help dentures fit better, as they create a way for the denture to be held in place.

Prior to beginning the implant process, we conduct a consultation appointment to determine whether implants are the best treatment for you. Following this initial appointment, the implant process typically takes place over several months and is comprised of the following steps:

  1. The implant is surgically placed into the jaw on top of the bone and the gum is secured over it. Recovery from this initial step can take between three to six months, as the implant must fuse with the jawbone.
  2. Once healed, an extension called an “abutment” is attached, creating a foundation for an artificial tooth. Recovery from this step can take a week or two, as the gum must heal around the abutment.
  3. Now that the foundation has been created and the gum around it healed, a custom artificial tooth is attached to the implant abutment.
